The Road to Good Health May be Gluten Free

Heart attack. Breast Cancer. Stroke. Alzheimer’s. Depression. Is there a common thread to these medical conditions? Interestingly, they have all been linked to chronic inflammation. As we age, our immune systems goes into overdrive and produces cells that attack your unhealthy tissues as well as your healthy ones. Luckily, with a few lifestyle modifications, our bodies can generally reverse the process.

Inflammation occurs when our body produces less capable cells to respond to an increasing amount of damage inside our body. There is a strong belief that the most common cause of chronic inflammation is our gut. Sensitivity to gluten, can turn the gut “leaky.” According to this theory, gluten causes the lining of the gut wall to grow porous, creating microscopic leakage into the bloodstream and lymph system.

Other culprits are:

  • Stress

  • Alcohol

  • Processed foods

  • Excessive exercise

  • Overexposure to antibiotics and ibuprofen.

Signs you may have chronic inflammation:

  • Gaining weight or not gaining results at the gym

  • Experiencing regular digestive distress

  • Sleeping less than 6 hours a night

  • Waking up stressed before your day even starts

Not sure about your inflammation levels? A high-sensitivity C-reactive protein test will actually measure inflammation in your blood.

Reducing or removing the possible culprits can be life-changing. Once inflammation is under control, the results can be dramatic. You will have more energy, less indigestion and a better outlook on life.

My “gut” tells me these lifestyle changes are worth a try, since the results are generally noticeable in a short period of time. What is your gut reaction?
